For Colon Surgery, Colonoscopy or Sphincteroplasty

Day Before Surgery

  • Clear liquid diet for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Water
  • Gatorade or Kool-Aid
  • Coffee (without cream)
  • Tea
  • Clear broth
  • Fruit juice without pulp
  • Jello (not red Jello)
  • Soda pop

Follow additional bowel prep instructions below!

  • No solid food (jello) for 8 hours prior to the procedure or surgery.
  • You may continue to take clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to procedure or surgery.
  • OK to take medicines with a sip of water.
  • One Fleet enema 1 hour prior to check in. Hold for 3–5 minutes.

MiraLax Prep

  • Take 4 Dulcolax tablets at noon.
  • Drink 8 oz of clear liquid containing one capful of MiraLax every 10 minutes until at least 9 glasses are consumed.
  • Continue to drink clear liquids throughout the evening until bowel movements become clear. 

NuLytely Prep

  • See patient directions provided on container.
  • Drink 8 oz of solution every 10 minutes until stool watery and clear or until container empty.
  • You may continue to drink clear liquids throughout the evening.

HalfLytely Prep (for patients with renal failure or partial obstruction)

  • See patient directions provided on side of box. You must complete ALL steps.
  • Continue to drink clear liquids throughout the evening until bowel movements become clear.

Bowel Prep for Outpatient Anal Surgery (all anal surgery except fissures)

  • Two fleets enemas (one at a time) 1–2 hours prior to check in. Hold each for 3-5 minutes.
  • No solid food for 8 hours prior to the procedure or surgery.
  • You may continue to take clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to procedure

Bowel Prep for Ileostomy Closure

  • Clear liquid diet after dinner preop.
  • No solid food for 8 hours prior to the procedure or surgery.
  • You may continue to take clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to procedure.
  • OK to take medicines with a sip of water.
  • No bowel cleansing such as an enema is necessary unless there is residual contrast.
